Review Of The Year by Tim Jupp, President 2009 The outdoor season at Carterton Bowls Club drew to a close with a thrilling victory for the club in the Evenlode trophy. Both Carterton teams qualified for the finals weekend where they battled it out with ten other teams from around the county with Baden Sparkes, George Weedon, Robbie Clanfield, Darren Wakeman and John Hicks claiming the trophy and prize money in a dramatic finish, winning their final match whilst Stuart Richens' side assisted greatly by holding off second placed Banbury Central.
A full programme of friendly and competitive games was completed with very little interruption from the weather and with some success. The men's Oxford & District League side managed, after a wobble, to maintain its first division status and reached the semi-final of the League Cup but were denied a place in the final by Kidlington. The West Oxon Ladies League side competed valiantly and achieved a couple of decent results which bode well for the future. The Men's and Ladies County Competitions attracted many entries from our club and Paul Sharman, David Clanfield and Sammy Timms excelled, reaching the final of the County Triples and qualifying for the National Championships at Worthing where they represented Oxfordshire.
The club's strength was illustrated early in the season when seven men were selected for the Oxfordshire Middleton Cup side, a great honour for the club. Others joined them representing the county at various levels including five of our younger players starring for Oxfordshire Under 25's. The progress made by our younger players has been significant this year as has the progress made by many of the newer bowlers, male and female. If you would like to come and join us and give bowls a try, pop into the club any evening as we move from the Outdoor Season to Indoor bowling and see what the game can offer you.
Finally the club Finals Weekend was well-attended and it was pleasing that a good proportion of members managed to make it through to the different finals which were played in the glorious sunshine which had been specially ordered. Some, pictured on this page, ultimately triumphed, others fell by the wayside but thanks to all who took part in this year's competitions. Congratulations to all the winners but particularly to Stuart Richens who took the Men's Singles title and Gill Muir who became the Ladies Singles Champion.
